Scalp Psoriasis: Is it Curable?

Psoriasis manifests when the replacement of skin cells happens at a much faster rate than 'normal', a phenomenon whose precise cause remains unknown. Research indicates a link to immune system dysfunction. The skin continually generates new cells in its deepest layer.

Scalp psoriasis, a subtype of plaque psoriasis, may affect specific areas or the entire scalp, leading to the formation of patches with thick scales. The degree of itchiness varies among individuals, with some experiencing significant discomfort while others remain unaffected.

What is the main cause of scalp psoriasis?

It arises when there's a malfunction of the immune system. The immune system instructs skin cells to undergo rapid growth. Instead of the usual weeks, new skin cells emerge within days. The surplus skin cells are not naturally shed by the body, accumulating on the skin's surface and giving rise to visible patches of psoriasis. These are the red flaky patches we see.

Can scalp psoriasis go away?

There isn't a cure for scalp psoriasis. You may have flare-ups and times where the plaques go away (remission). Treatment can provide relief for your symptoms and can include UV light or medications that can be directly applied to the lesions, injected into the lesions or taken by mouth

The primary prescribed remedy for scalp psoriasis in both children and adults is corticosteroids. Corticosteroids efficiently and rapidly alleviate redness, swelling, itching, and scaling. The problem with this though is that as usual, it's a topical treatment. While it may help with symptoms, it does not treat the underlying cause of why you have psoriasis.
